Absent the rigidity of the 1930's recording studio [It had to be perfect all the way through] Artie's best band sounds relaxed and swinging. Helen Forrest is amazingly relaxed and confident in her vocals. The most distinctive thing is the way the band completely changes its mood and execution from "Deep in a Dream" and "Deep Purple" to "Diga Diga Doo" while retaining its style. I'm sure the leader's sense of romantic style was critical here. By the way, who are the radio announcers on these shows? Enjoy!
A nice chance to hear Shaw and his big band, live! Grea sound quality, and virtuoso clarinet playing. Shaw swing as hard as Goodman, but Shaw was better technically, where Goodman took more chances, and was wilder. Shaw and hos orch. are more then a nostalgia big band, they are a hard swinging jazz orchestra!!!!
