HARTSVILLE _ For anyone picking up a copy of “What Goes Wrong Can Make You Better: Chronicles of an Irreverent Reverend,” don’t expect to find a collection of Bible-thumping, fire-and-brimstone sermons.

 Author Dr. Joe Baroody, who will be in Hartsville today to sign copies of his book at a meet-and-greet event at Burry Bookstore, sees the collection of 23 stories as a sometimes-humorous, sometimes serious journey through life’s rollercoaster ride of joys and sorrows.

 “I’m hoping that readers will find messages of faith, hope and inspiration mixed in between the laughter and the tears,” said Baroody, pastoral counselor and an ordained Baptist minister from Florence.

 Over the course of his 30-year professional career, Baroody has served as chaplain, minister, counselor at hospitals and medical centers in South Carolina. He has been in private counseling practice since 2001 and has published numerous articles, essays and poems in regional and national publications. This is his first foray at publishing a book.

 Baroody said the stories are based on his personal experiences in ministry and with his family. He said that for the most part the stories are in chronological order, beginning with his younger, more adventurous days in the opening tale, “Chocolate Naked Ladies.” Along the way you will find other stories, such as “A Night with Ray the Cabdriver,” “The Alligator Belt,” “Snicker Snatch,” “Maroon Cadillac” and “My Daughter’s Wedding Day.” The final story recounts Baroody the grandfather baptizing his grandson.

 Baroody said that if you look at the book as a whole you can see transformations taking place in his life.

 While most, if not all, of the stories reference Christianity, Baroody said they are intended to be secular and spiritual with an appeal that is universal.

 “It was a wonderful experience, both rewarding and frustrating at times,” said Baroody of the 18 months it took to write the book.
