A Very Special President By: Laura Bergquist and Stanley Tretick

Good Condition - Large Book

This was one of President Kennedy's friendly enemies. At least, this was her role as the image-conscious Kennedys saw her. She is a top-flight journalist and was often assigned to do Kennedy stories. While she was always prepared to ask the questions and select the answers that would make up her text, the impressions she gathered, the things she saw and overheard were often off-limits for the articles she was working on. These were articles with pictures for Look magazine for which special permission had been granted and over which the Kennedys, from Papa Joe down, exercised some control and to which they reacted with anger or pleasure. There is a lot about each member of the First Family and JFK's brothers and sisters and their children. Much of it is trivia but gains in importance by the fact that much of it was trivia that the Kennedy's clan didn't want, or expect to see, published. The quotes are candid, direct and...delightfully image-changing. (Mrs. JFK on a name dropping hanger-on: ""She's a nice girl, but sort of a pilot fish, don't you think?"") This is the humanizing side, done with the sort of sophistication, wit and energy that made the man and his circle so attractive.
