When most people think of Memphis, Tennessee, they think of the mighty Mississippi, Beale Street, riverboats, the Blues, great sports, delicious food, the home of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. It is certainly one of the great cities of the South.
But for gospel music lovers, Memphis is famous for being the home of the legendary Blackwood Brothers.
The original group began in Jackson with the tree brothers: James, Roy, Doyle and Roy's son - R.W. Blackwood. As is true in most groups, there would be several personnel changes from Jackson to Shreveport, to Shanandoah, Iowa and finally Memphis.
By the early 50s, the Blackwoods had established a worldwide reputation for excellence and because of their RCA recordings, they were in demand all over the country.
Because of this demand, they decided to purchase a plane to help them in their travel. On June 30, 1954, Bill Lyles and R.W. lost their lives in that same plane.

R.W.'s younger brother, Cecil and J.D. Sumner joined the group; and they continued to grow in popularity through the 60s, 70s and 80s, even though the group went through many new changes. Recently, many of the past members came together again at James' home in Memphis. James and Mim had their children and grandchildren there. It was a wonderful celebration and sharing stories of the past - a Blackwood family reunion.
