Chronological Vol. 2

By The Mills Brothers

Very Good Condition

The second of six CDs from the British JSP label to trace all of the Mills Brothers' recordings from their first eight years on record has 23 performances covering a 21 month period. In addition to their solo records in which the four vocalists are accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, there are collaborations with Duke Ellington ("Diga, Diga, Do"), Cab Calloway and the Don Redman Orchestra ("Doin' the New Low Down"), Alice Faye ("Dinah"), and Bing Crosby (two versions of "My Honey's Lovin' Arms"); the last selection also includes short spots for future bandleaders Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Bunny Berigan. The studio recordings are augmented by two numbers from a soundtrack of a film. Some of the other highpoints of this quite fascinating release include "The Old Man of the Mountain," "Bugle Call Rag," a haunting version of "Smoke Rings," and "I've Found a New Baby." The Mills Brothers at their best.
