Sue Raney - Ridin' High
Ridin' High
By Sue Raney with the Bob Florence Group
Very Good Condition
A Review:
In purchasing an LP of Songs by the great Composer-Arranger Johnny Mandel made 1n 1983, the songs were sung by someone named SUE RANEY I had never heard of in my long life honoring everyone from Ella and Sarah to Audra McDonald, but during the first five minutes of listening I wondered WHY (?!)THIS marvel wasn't equally famous? Beautiful Voice (Sue Raney had been signed for 3 LPs by Capital Records when she was 17-years old in 1957, giving her the legendary Nelson Riddle to guide her first effort) but it was not until 1983 when she recorded three LPs (since put on CDs) with Bob Florence's Group (including this "RIDIN' HIGH") that the free glory of her experience found FULL expression: not only a glorious voice that now demonstrated a wide vocal range, but a TRUE ability to give every word and thought of each Lyric the emotional content it deserved, and an unique ability to somehow almost whisper musically as if not to an audience, but intimately, individually, personally, to "you." I recommend those THREE sessions with the BOB FLORENCE GROUP: not only "RIDIN' HIGH," but that first "QUIETLY THERE" and the third "FLIGHT OF FANCY" featuring songs all with Lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman; plus anything Sue Raney has recorded since that time when her total abilty has been given unlimited expression; her voice and skill remains just as fabulous and rewarding even up to her latest 2007 recording of "HEART'S DESIRE" (a tribute to Doris Day). Since that first hearing, I have been able through Amazon to find all of her available recordings with increased regard and continued grateful appreciation to have chanced upon her artistry.
