In between the time rock and pop music went album-oriented and the time video killed the radio star -- that is, 1970 to 1980 -- the group known as Steely Dan held a unique and significant position in the listening public's minds and on FM radio playlists. More jazz than rock yet more rock than pop, founders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen and their various sidemen offered intelligent, arresting lyrics and virtuoso playing, and achieved immense popularity among casual listeners and aficionados both. The selections on this well-curated sixteen-tracker offer a healthy mix of best-of and fan-choice orientations; and while it may not please those most heavily invested in the group and its already too-frequent compilations, it is a great choice for those wanting to experience Steely Dan at its best. In true jazz style, the accompanying booket does not list lyrics (nor will you need them; Steely Dan's albums were meant to be listened to), but instead a chronological list of which musicians teamed up with Becker and Fagen on any given song. The engineering and remasterings are top-notch and the price is right, making this an excellent choice for curious beginners and a fine gift for Baby Boomers. Highly recommended.
