It is remarkable how many obscure recordings are included on this CD. Twenty-five trumpeters (most from the swing or pre-swing era) are featured, often as sidemen. The music ranges from a 1925 Original Memphis Five recording with Phil Napoleon to Dizzy Gillespie soloing with Cab Calloway's Orchestra. Even veteran collectors will probably not have the majority of these performances. The other trumpeters heard from are Bunny Berigan, Louis Prima, Jack Purvis, Frankie Newton, Charlie Spivak, Mannie Klein (with a Hawaiian group), Bobby Hackett, Ziggy Elman, Roy Eldridge, Sonny Dunham, Wingy Manone, Red Nichols, Max Kaminsky, Sweets Edison, the obscure Frank Humprhies, Hot Lips Page, Shorty Baker, Cat Anderson, Red Allen, Buck Clayton, Charlie Shavers, Rex Stewart and Harry James. Certainly this is a CD well worth searching for.

A Review:

This is an awesome collection of sweet and swinging trumpet masterpieces. It's a shame it is difficult to find because many of the tracks are one of a kind finds. I especially like Hoohihi Oe Ke Ike Mai (You Will Like Me I Know) by Mannie Klein and His Swing-A-Hulas. Grab it if you can find it!!
